Pineapples are delicious, exotic fruits that once represented high social status. Back in the 1700s, pineapples could cost up to $8,000 (in today's dollars). The less wealthy could rent pineapples for a day or two to take with them to a party to flaunt their ability to "afford" a pineapple. The fabulously wealthy of the time would out-right purchase a pineapple for an outrageous sum of money to display the pineapple as a center piece. Pineapples were so highly regarded due to their novelty, scarcity, perishability, and exotic nature. You can also flaunt your high-class persona by adding a pineapple to your castle!
